Before uploading a website, identify its document root, back up existing files and check whether the application needs a database. Use the control panel's file manager or a transfer protocol supported by your provider.

Connect securely

Prefer SFTP or FTPS over plain FTP when supported. SFTP uses SSH, whereas FTPS protects FTP with TLS. They are different protocols; obtain the server, port and account details from your service instructions. The WordPress file transfer guide also recommends encrypted methods.

Upload checklist

  1. Find the correct domain and document root in the panel; directory layouts can differ.
  2. Back up existing files rather than deleting the live site in bulk.
  3. Select the correct protocol and provider details in your client. Investigate unexpected certificate or host-key changes.
  4. Transfer the required files and check the failed-transfer queue.
  5. For database applications, migrate the database separately and update connection settings. Keep passwords out of screenshots.
  6. Test the homepage, internal pages, forms, login and HTTPS.

Migration planning

For a move to a hosting account, review the hosting migration scope. Schedule DNS changes after testing the files and database, and decide how writes made during migration will be synchronised.
