Technical update: 22 October 2026. MAPI means Messaging Application Programming Interface and relates to programming interfaces in Microsoft’s messaging ecosystem. It is not another name for IMAP or SMTP. Opening an account in Outlook does not, by itself, establish that the account uses MAPI.
The Microsoft MAPI reference documents programming elements. MAPI over HTTP concerns transport for supported Outlook/Exchange connections. The shared acronym does not mean every mail server offers this capability.
SMTP handles message submission/transfer, while IMAP provides mailbox access. Functions offered by MAPI-based integrations depend on product and version compatibility. Assess calendars, contacts and shared resources beyond a generic claim of email support.
Copying messages over IMAP does not establish that calendars and contacts move through the same method. Review each data type, export option and rollback path separately. Do not weaken security settings to preserve an obsolete client.
Do not assume a business mail server includes MAPI/Exchange-style features. Confirm supported clients and protocols in writing. Mail relay is an outbound transport service, distinct from mailbox and calendar synchronisation.
