WHM / cPanel Error: Add New IP Address – Skipping: “Already Added”

When adding a new IP address to a server running cPanel/WHM, you may encounter the following error:

WHM Error: Add New IP Address – Skipping: “Already Added”

WHM Add New IP Address screen showing the Already Added error

There are two possible reasons for this error:

  1. The IP address you are trying to add is already configured on the server. Check Show IP Address Usage in WHM to see whether the address is already listed.
  2. The IP address was previously configured on the server but was not removed correctly. When you add an IP address through WHM, it is also written to several configuration files. If you remove it through the network settings rather than through WHM, entries may remain in those files and cause this error.

The original article describes connecting to the server over SSH and checking the following configuration files with the nano editor:

nano -w /etc/hosts
nano -w /etc/ips
nano -w /etc/mail_reverse_dns

nano - w /var/cpanel/mainip

It then describes removing any remaining entries for the IP address from those files and running the following commands:

/etc/init.d/network restart
/etc/init.d/ipaliases restart
